I arrived at Landsberg in April, 1956 from AFSCC right out of cryptanalysis school.  I had flown into Frankfort on a Navy C-118 with one other airman heading to Landsberg.  We rode the train from Frankfurt to Augsburg with a load of soldiers and airmen were I boarded an old coal burning train with two cars, one a second class ant the other a third class which me and the other guy boarded not knowing which ticket we had. It looked like an old wooden stagecoach from the old west.  Before the train left a german in a green uniform came back and motioned us up to the second class car.  Stayed in Landsberg until October when the German Air Force moved in then moved to Zweibrucken until Dec. 57 and from there back to AFSCC at Kelly. Separated April, 59. Recalled to Ready reserve when the Cuban Missile deal went down,  Finally discharged June 1963.

Ran across the website for the 6901st Special Communications Group
at Zweibrücken Rh/P.  I was sad to see that the prior inhabitants of
the Kreuzberg Kaserne, the 307th Replacement Group, weren't mentioned.
I was station there in 1953 and 1954, living in the building which is
numbered 4003 on your map.  The building had been build to house
anti-aircraft crews and trainees by the Deutsche Wehrmacht in the
early years of WWII.  The British had messed up the whole place during
the war (there used to be aircraft gun photos in the headquarters
building showing the buildings under attack by Mosquitos).

I've been back there a couple of times since: once in 1971, again in
1974, then 1987, and expect to be in the town for a couple of days
in June this year.

Yes, what a great time that was!  We were young, well fed, and eager to experience to world.  I traveled every chance I got and was lucky enough to have an OIC - I guess that means Officer in Charge - who needed to get in flying hours and I always made myself available.  Landsberg was a neat town and the base was quite nice too.  We were spoiled.  I spent a lot of time working out in the weight room that we put together ourselves.
I was schooled at Kelly in cryptography and shipped out to Germany in May of 1955 and rotated back in April of 1958.  We had one really cold winter spell, like 25 below, with lots of snow, as I recall.
I'll see what photos I might have.

Wiederschen!

My name is Al Picard and I served with the 6901st when it was in Landsberg from in 1956.  Originally, I was with the 6910th, (1956 - 1956) but our unit (Direction Finding) was transferred to the 6901st.  I was never officially assigned to Zweibrucken, however, my father passed away in November of 1956 and I had to make a trip to Zweibrucken to get my travel orders.  My enlistment was up in December 1956, so it was decided to discharge me early. The main reason I am writing this to you is to see if there is any interest in a list of 6901st and 6905th (around 80 names)  airmen that were promoted to Airmen 2nd, Airmen 1st and Staff Sergeant.  It is kind of yellow and doggie eared, but still quite ledgible.  Please let me know if you are interested and I will scan it and send it to you.

Al Picard (now in Ocala, Florida)
