1000109|Tom Stadler (now known as Tom Elliott)|This was my first assignment
out of tech school from March AFB in Riverside, California. I was stationed at
Zwie from about March 57 to March 61, transferred to Tacoma as a plane old
typest but while at 6901st was in R&R. Great time. Never promoted for I
had a big mouth and jokenly said I could out run a 45 slug. My Lt in R&R
was not amused. Glowing reports but no promotion. Oh well, it was still a
great assignment. Took one of my 30day leaves all at once and toured Europe
with my Aunt (really she was my Aunt, my step fathers sister) and came back
with some great Flamenco Dance pictures. I was encouraged to get the heck out
and pursue photography. I did even though I had aspirations of going to OCS
and make the USAFSS my career as an officer. Oh well, fantasy. I am now a free
lance photojournalist here in Miami, Florida. More to come. Oh I am looking

TIMES IN ZWEIBRUCKEN. TO MAKE EXTRA MONEY ON BASE, I PLAYED AT THE EM CLUB,
NCO CLUB AND OFFICERS CLUB, IN A BAND THAT I FORMED CALLED THE "NIGHT
OWLS", AND WE STARTED OUT USING OR BORROWING GUITARS AND EQUIPMENT FROM
THE SERVICE CLUB, WITHOUT THE KNOWLEDGE OF THE SERVICE CLUB DIRECTOR. LATER ON
WE WERE ABLE TO EVENTUALLY BUY OUR OWN<br>EQUIPMENT, AND THE GREATEST
NIGHT WE HAD AT THE AIRMANS CLUB WAS AROUND 500<br>PEOPLE JAMMED INTO
THE CLUB FOR ONE OF THE HOTTEST DANCES EVER HELD IN THE CLUB. WE WERE THE

THE ARMY GUYS WERE ALWAYS BROKE DAYS AFTER PAYDAY AND THEY ONLY GOT PAID ONCE
A MONTH. WELL...THE ARMY<br>FOUND OUT THAT I HAD MONEY TO LOAN, AND THE
DEAL WAS, IF YOU BORROW FIVE DOLLARS, YOU JUST PAID ME SIX DOLLARS ON PAYDAY,
OR IF YOU WANTED TEN DOLLARS, THEN THE PAY BACK WAS TWELVE DOLLARS. WELL
BEFORE YOU KNEW IT, I HAD<br>ON AN AVERAGE OF 2 TO 3 THOUSAND

WAS FUN. AFTER THE GAME..WE HAD A CHANCE TO ROAM BRUSSELS NIGHT LIFE AND WE
ALL WERE WALKING DOWNTOWN, AND WE WALKED INTO A BAR THAT HAD LIVELY MUSIC FROM
THE STREET, SO WE (THE WHOLE BASKETBALL TEAM) WALKED INTO THIS BAR AND WE
NOTICED A LOT OF PEOPLE ON THE DANCE FLOOR, AND WE TOOK A HARD LOOK AND WE

1000111|Jim Wachowski|I walked the foggy, damp roads of Kruezburg/Turenne
Kaserne both drunk and sober, depending on whether I was going to or coming
back from work, from Jan 1964 to Feb 1966. At a R&G Club membership
meeting, I was nominated by a staff sgt (no name, but he had an old-time
handlebar mustache)to serve on the club's board. He stated my main
qualification was "He's there all the time!" The 6901st began
cutting down, and I spent the remaining year of my tour at Lindsey AS. Leaving
the 6901st was a joyful experience. Six months later while waiting for a train
to Garmisch, I asked a cab driver how much it would cost to take me to
Zweibrucken. The driver and I polished off a bottle of sloe gin on the way to
Zwei and I spent a week in the 6901st transit room. I guess leaving the first
time felt so good that I wanted to do it again! Names that come to mind:
"Kip" Conyne, Chief Shannahan, Ralph Kidder, Paul Brezinski, Matt
Lafebvre, (?)Redmond, Lamar Little, John Pigg,John Gerry, Grubbs, Marquee,
Sammy Kitchens, and a lot of faces I can't pin a name on. From Germany I went
to Holloman AFB, NM; Phan Rang AB, RVN; back to Holloman AFB; SHAPE, Belgium;
Cannon AFB, NM; Izmir, Turkey; finally to Homestead AFB, FL. Somehow made
master and retired in 1980. Then worked in accounting at Owens-Illinois Glass
and 12 years at McLane Co from where I retired last March. Can I go now?? It's

1000114|Bob Clerc|Came to Zwei from Karamursel sometime in 1958 and left a
little over a year later because the way DEROS was calculated with short tour
time at Samsun. Only a year but had a great time. Didn't do as much travel as
should have, but did manage to go from Zwei into the Saar and then into France
to help close the bars on an occasion or two. Luckily had a job behind a
bolted door that allowed recovery time. One favorite food there was the
lasagne bianca at the Jaeger Hoff. Have never had anything like it since
although one NYC restaurant came close. Went to the SpecCommCtr from Zwei.

would like to make an addition comment, for those that were not aware,
that Raymond Sharpe (1961 - 1964) passed away in February 2005. His
family still resides in Omaha. I also
remain in touch with Fred Mattea and see him about once a year. He
lives west of Chicgo about 50 miles. I
looked to see if there was a way to make that change myself, but it appears
that I have to go through you. Thanks for your help and I enjoyed going
through some of the comments. Ron Smillie
1000133|Jim Wachowski|Hi, Ron! I believe you worked in DEPCOMDROPN with Lamar
Little, John Pigg, and Matthew Lafebvre. I replaced Little, who went to Key
West.<br><br>On Little's last day, he gave me an old, tarnished
ball bearing along with instructions that when things were slow you could take
a retractable ballpoint pen and "click" the ball bearing across the
desk in some form of golfing game. This was to "look busy" because
as you know, in the command section, you couldn't openly lollygag. After a
week, I started using the ball bearing and spent many hours "looking
busy." It actually worked! Looked like you were sorting papers or
something.<br><br>MSgt Lefebvre, the NCOIC, worked on the other
side of the wall, but there was a little window opening out of which he could
"supervise" or talk to us. When you looked up from your desk and
caught him watching (supervising) you, he had a habit of jerking his head back
like he was calling you over. Of course when you walked over to see what he
wanted, he would say "I didn't want to see
you."<br><br>I used to "file" an extra copy of all
TWX's under my desk pad because there was no control of classified material
and once something went into the file cabinet, it was gone forever. One day I
came back from lunch and found Lefebvre and a couple of lt cols around my
desk--looking for some TWX under my desk pad! After a while, you could see a
noticeable bulge on the desk pad, so that made it time to throw out the old
stuff. Besides, the bulge threw my "golfing" game
off!<br><br>My vital position was eliminated and I went back to
the real Air Force at Lindsey AS in 1966. There was no replacement for me, so
there was no one to carry on the tradition of passing off the ball
bearing.<br><br>So much for the good old days!|1080744235|jimah@earthlink.net|Bruceville,

1000135|Tom Pugh 12/'62-05/'65|This is my 87th entry in the 6901st Guestbook.
They keep disappearing. My dates follow my name. Worked in SAWD-2, OPN-AW.
Worked in SAC recon and wrote wrap-up reports. I recall so much from those
years such as the stand-by inspection taped by one of the guys. A comedy
classic!! Then there was C-C-C-C-Cu-Cu-Commanders Call hosted by everyone's
favorite career captain, Capt. Halverson. The day the screen blew off the burn
room chimney and we all scampered out to scour the hills and dales surrounding
Olde Kreuzburg to make sure some Swamp tapes weren't blowing in the breeze and
in danger of being scarfed up by some nefarious Soviet operative bent on the
destruction of the world as we knew it. The weekly meeting of the USAF
Benevolent Society, better known as Nickel Beer Night and the R & G Club.
The Terrible Food episode that made it to the pages of the Over-sexed Weekly
and resulted in the Air Force taking over the Chow Hall, so named because of
dog burgers served every third day. Religeous retreats to Rome were always
welcomed as a way to remind us of who the REAL first shirt was, refresh our
souls and remind us of the benefits of lots of sacremental wine and crackers.
Some of the names: Jon Horton, a wild westerner whose art served as an
inspirational centerpiece each Christmas; Ken Shore, a fine fellow from South
Carolina who enlivened many a gathering with his wit and expertise as a Front
man on the Foosball table; "Bernie" Bolduc, King of the Duty Roster,
whose main contribution was making sure that all duty rosters within 1000 feet
were regularly updated; A nameless gentleman who worked in the comm center,
who, after 20 years finally got promoted to S/sgt and wore his dress blues for
a solid year thereafter; the KY-9, our secure voice transmission device that,
it was later discovered, was compromised to the Soviets by some Spec 5 pounder
in Paris for a few thousand dollars; all the 203's who pissed and moaned when
notified that they would be re-assigned and then found out they would be given
quarters and civilian clothing allowances and sent to european capitals to
work in embassy mail rooms. But I'm very pleased to have served in a unique
part of the AF and to have worked with so many fine people.|1082221735|tpugh1@houston.rr.com|Houston,

1000142|Jeff|Thank you for helping evoke fond memories of my time spent in
Germany. However, your association of President Clinton with defectors to the
Soviet Union is disappointing and in poor taste. President Clinton decided to
stand by his conscience and risk imprisonment by protesting Vietnam; he didn't
hide behind the power and money of friends and family to avoid service. As the
elected president of these United States, he's entitled to a measure of
respect that this site, which claims to speak for service men and women, sadly
lacks. |1085769441||Warren,

1000144|Tom Pugh|I feel compelled to disagree with Jeff who is so distraught
over the publication on this site of one of the thousands of lies and
mis-representations perpetrated by Clinton and the association of him with
other dishonorable men. Blindly honoring people because they were able to
hoodwink the public enough to get elected president makes no sense even though
those of us who didn't lie our way out of serving the country were conditioned
to "honor the rank not the man". I think it is fitting that the
death of President Reagan is overshadowing the release of Clinton's
autobiography. The symbolism couldn't be clearer! The contrast of a
principled, honorable man who wanted to be president because he loved this
country and had a vision of what it should be with a vain, un-principled,
adolescent, ego-maniacal sociopath who wanted to be president so he could ride
in the big airplane couldn't be any clearer. In my opinion, the only person
who should honor Clinton is Warren Harding because now, to many people, he is
no longer considered the most worthless president ever elected.<br>

1000145|Trish (Noland) Schiesser|I agree with Tom Pugh's compelling message
negating what "Jeff" had to say, not only about the fact that the
6901st site is "lacking" but Jeff's unfortunate inability to see
that former President Clinton wrote a letter, which exists on this site,
verbatim, with his views on war and indicating, strongly, by his wording in
his letter that he did not believe in serving while his nation was at war.
Former President Clinton's letter says it all. He was and is a great orator,
and there is no mistaking it in his words. However, one does not need to read
between the lines of his letter to see what he was asking. This is a valuable
and distinctive site which honors so many who did serve and so many who were
honorable and served their country without hesitation, offering up their lives
for their country and our freedom. Sorry, Jeff, I don't think I know you, but
you should re-read our former President's words with more comprehension. Good
luck to you - I'm sure you must have served your country well. If you had left
an e-mail address, I would have spoken to you privately. I believe in freedom
of speech, however, no one should question Don Levesque's intentions. He is a
fine and honorable man of the 6901st, and a Pastor whom many hold in high

this war on terror? The analogy of the shepherd, sheep and wolf is very
fitting in this election year. A quote from Abraham Lincoln reads; "The
shepherd drives the wolf from the sheep's throat, for which the sheep thanks
the shepherd as a liberator, while the wolf denounces him for the same act as
a destroyer of liberty". Those who label our president and Prime Minister
Blair as violators of human rights, and warmongers, are in league with the
wolf's view that shepherds are destroying liberty. Where were these same
people when the people in Iraq were being slaughtered over the last 15 years?

everyone of the bills introduced in Congress to correct these injustices. He

1000161|Don Levesque|Guy's here is the situation on expense of our site. I
called LinkSky our server and found out that I could renew our site service
for two years, it would be $59.40 a year so for two years it would cost us
$118.80 Now for the Domain name which has to be renewed every year comes up
this coming September, it's $19.00 a year so for two years it will come u9 to
$38.00 Phil Conrad has pledge $75.00 and Bill Watts $25.00 That leaves us
$56.80 So anyone else out there would like to help? Or do we just want to pay
for one year? I believe two would be better. Again I want to thak Phil and
Bill. I believe they contributed in the past to keep our site online. So guy's
we could pay for more than two years if more of you are interested. God Bless

Here's a little more specific info on everbody's 01st
favorite 1st-Shirt, Thurman Miller. It's from an
e-mail I got from a lady at the VA hospital in Big
Spring, Tx:
"... Big Spring VAMC records indicate that we had a
Thermon Miller that served in the USAF from 1946 -
1969 and passed away here in February 1998."
I was surprised to receive any feedback from the VA,
thinking privacy concerns would rule out divulging
anything. That "1946-1969" figure looks bogus, as
Miller was at least a SMSGT - maybe a CMSGT - in 1962.
He would have been at least SMSGT after only 16 years
in the AF. Even his winning personality couldn't
achieve that, unless he had revealing 8X10 motel
glossies on Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Goldwater,
Sam Rayburn, Mother Theresa, and the Pope.
Anyway ... I've asked the same lady if the remains of
the deceased were released to anyone from a specific
city. If so, there might be an archival obit still
available from 1998.
In some 63 Commander's Calls, Miller ranted at us
barrack rats for holding double-bunk bed races in the
hallways. We sheared off a few wall-mounted drinking
fountains. Later in the same year, he went into low
orbit because certain barrack dwellers were setting
off M-88 salutes in, and destroying, the commodes.
Still later the same year he really went off the deep
end. Seems some lowlife was stealing shower clogs
("Zorris") from his fellow Cold Warriors.
